Pig butchering with AI: the chatbot that becomes your boyfriend
Dating apps flooded with AI agents that build relationships at scale and redirect victims to fake crypto platforms.

Scenario
The victim spends three months talking on Tinder with someone who "understands like no one else". Fluid conversation, empathy, plans together. The new partner mentions a crypto investment app where she already earns returns. The victim puts in R$ 5k, profits R$ 5k in a week, deposits R$ 50k. The platform disappears. There was no human on the other side — it was a conversational AI plugged into a mass-purchased account.
How the scam works
Operators buy verified Tinder, Bumble and Hinge accounts on the gray market. They plug in GPT-4 chatbots with persona-tailored prompts (engineer, doctor, executive). A single infrastructure talks to thousands of matches simultaneously. The emotional bond is built over four to eight weeks, and only then is the victim redirected to a fake crypto platform controlled by the group.
Common mistake
Assuming the person on the other side is human because they reply fast, show empathy and remember details. Today's AIs do all of that better than tired humans — including simulating jealousy, fragility and emotional investment.
Impact
6.9 million fraud attempts recorded in the first half of 2025 — the equivalent of 4 scams per minute. Average reported loss: R$ 30k to R$ 150k per victim, with no recovery in more than 90% of cases.
What works
A mandatory video call before any financial move motivated by an online relationship. If the person never shows up live, assume AI. Reverse image search on every profile photo — AI re-creation is detectable through lighting/shadow inconsistencies.
Protection checklist
- Require a video call before any relationship-motivated transfer
- Reverse image search every photo before deepening contact
- Validate identity through older social profiles (pre-2023)
- Never send money to someone you have never seen live
- Treat financial urgency as a fraud signal — 100% of the time
- Share any "opportunity" with a trusted person before investing
- Report suspicious profiles to the platform and SaferNet

Dating chatbots are the pig butchering of the future: industrial scale, zero cost, untraceable. The new frontier of fraud is synthetic empathy.
