My Instagram was cloned: what to do now, step by step

An emergency guide to recover your account or take down the cloned profile before it scams your followers.

Audience: Professionals and Personal Brands · Risk level: CRITICAL

Scenario

You discover a profile identical to yours — same photo, same name, copied bio — messaging your followers asking for Pix transfers, offering promotions or "investments". Every minute it stays up is a follower at risk.

How the scam works

The criminal doesn't need to hack anything: he copies your public photos and creates a new account with a nearly identical name (one letter swapped, an extra dot). Then he follows your follower list and blasts messages posing as you.

Common mistake

Only asking friends to report the profile. Generic mass reporting rarely works — what takes it down is the right report, in the right category ("pretending to be me"), with proof of identity, plus a formal notice when the platform ignores you.

Impact

Scams run on your followers in your name, broken trust in your personal brand and, for anyone who lives off an audience, direct revenue and reputation damage.

What works

Alerting your audience immediately (pinned stories warning about the clone), reporting through the "account pretending to be you" flow with an ID document, recording evidence BEFORE the profile goes down (screenshots with URL and date) and escalating with a formal extrajudicial notice if there is no response.

Protection checklist

  • Screenshot the fake profile with the URL visible (evidence)
  • Warn your audience from your real profile (stories + pinned post)
  • Report inside Instagram: Profile > Report > "Pretending to be someone else"
  • Use Meta's impersonation form with a photo of your ID
  • Ask 3-5 close contacts to report in the SAME category
  • File a police report (B.O.) online (your state's virtual precinct)
  • If it isn't down in 48h, escalate: formal notice or specialized support

A cloned profile is the crime of false identity, and removal has a proven path. If the platform doesn't respond or the scam is already running, Blindfy takes over the takedown with crisis priority.
