Scenario
You learn through a message, screenshot or friend that a pornographic image or video using your face is circulating. You never recorded it: it was generated or manipulated with artificial intelligence, but it looks convincing enough to mislead viewers.
How the scam works
Generative AI tools recreate a face from a small set of public photos, such as social media posts, websites or videos, and place it on another person's body in adult content. The material is then distributed through websites, fake profiles and closed Telegram groups, often to humiliate, extort or sell access.
Common mistake
Panicking and trying to handle it alone by deleting screenshots, replying to the attacker or requesting removal before preserving evidence. Destroying evidence weakens later legal action, while negotiating with an extortionist usually triggers further demands.
Impact
Severe emotional distress, damage to personal and professional reputation, continued extortion risk and repeated publication on mirror sites. Women are disproportionately targeted, and specialists recognize the psychological harm as a form of violence.
What works
Preserve evidence such as URLs and dated screenshots, use the platform's most specific legal or policy route, prioritize the most visible copies for takedown and monitor recurrence. A police report and legal action can run in parallel when appropriate; technical removal and legal response reinforce each other.
Protection checklist
- Do NOT negotiate with or pay anyone threatening publication — it usually escalates
- Preserve evidence: save URLs and dated screenshots before requesting removal
- Record where the content appears, including websites, profiles and groups
- Report through the platform's non-consensual intimate content channel
- File a police report where applicable and retain its reference number
- Do not face this alone: seek technical and personal support
- Monitor recurrence because removed content often returns on mirrors
