Scenario
An executive meets someone interesting on a dating app. The conversations last weeks: deep, reciprocal, with no financial ask whatsoever. At some point, the person mentions "a crypto platform with consistent returns". She invites the executive to test with a small amount. The return shows up. Convinced, he invests significant sums. When he tries to withdraw, he discovers it was all staged.
How the scam works
Pig butchering ("fattening the pig") is a long-game scam. Operators build a real or romantic relationship over weeks or months (hence the name), deliver trust and only then introduce the "investment". The platform is fake, shows forged gains and allows small withdrawals at first. After the big deposit, the account is frozen. Surveys show growth above 400%.
Common mistake
Thinking "we have talked for months, so it's trustworthy". The relationship time is the criminal's investment, not a guarantee of good faith.
Impact
Asset losses that frequently reach hundreds of thousands or millions of reais, severe emotional damage, exposure of personal and banking data and extreme recovery difficulty since it usually involves crypto sent to international wallets.
