Scenario
A relative calls, confused: "did you change your number?". Someone created a WhatsApp account with YOUR photo as the profile picture and is messaging your contacts — "I changed my SIM, can you send me an urgent Pix?". The name and face are yours; the number and the receiving account belong to the criminal.
How the scam works
The photo comes from any public social network. The scammer didn't hack your WhatsApp — he simply set up a new number with your image and approaches whoever interacts with you publicly (likes, comments, friend lists).
Common mistake
Assuming you were "hacked" and changing every password in a panic — while the scam keeps running on the fake number. No password takes the number down: what does is reporting it inside WhatsApp plus a mass alert to your contacts.
Impact
Family and friends wiring money to criminals in your name. Beyond their losses, the wear remains: every victim associates the scam with YOUR face.
What works
Posting an immediate alert on all your networks ("I did not change my number, it's a scam"), asking contacts to report the number inside WhatsApp itself (Report > Block), filing a police report (B.O.) online and, if you are a public figure or the scam persists, monitoring for recurrence — new numbers pop up with the same photo.
