Scenario

A real intimate image of you, originally shared with someone you trusted or obtained through a compromised device or account, begins circulating publicly without your authorization, sometimes alongside humiliating captions or exposed contact information.

How the scam works

Non-consensual intimate imagery can follow the end of a relationship, a cloud or device compromise, or a chain leak. Once published, the file is copied by sites that profit from this material and reposted on mirrors, turning removal into an ongoing operation instead of a single report.

Common mistake

Assuming one report will solve the problem, or deleting your own copies out of shame before documenting the incident. Without preserved evidence and mirror monitoring, the content returns and the victim loses both accountability options and visibility into where it is circulating.

Impact

Devastating public exposure, harassment, professional risk and repeated publication across mirror sites and groups. Each new copy restarts the cycle and prolongs the harm.

What works

Document every relevant location, notify platforms through their NCII procedures, apply the relevant Brazilian legal framework, remove copies in sequence and monitor reuploads. Hashing tools such as StopNCII can help block reposts on participating platforms while a takedown operation covers the broader web.

Protection checklist

  • Preserve URLs, dated screenshots and available information about the publisher
  • Do not delete your own copies before documenting the incident
  • Use the platform's non-consensual intimate content reporting route
  • Register hashes with StopNCII to help block reposts on participating networks
  • File a police report where applicable and keep the reference number
  • Change passwords and enable 2FA if an account or device was compromised
  • Set up mirror monitoring for continued removal
